The Gates of Hell...!

Door to Hell is a natural gas field located in the village of Door in the middle of the Karakum desert in the Ahal province of Turkmenistan.

In 1971 petrochemical engineers from the Soviet Union started a fire there.

This fire is not extinguished due to natural gas components in this area. The acrid smell of sulfur burning in this fire spreads for some distance in the area.

It is nicknamed Door to Hell by the locals because of the fire, boiling mud and reddish-orange flames that erupt from the 70 meter diameter crater in the door.

The crater was discovered in 1971 by Soviet engineers. At first it was thought that there would be oil reserves. But methane gas started coming out of it. Therefore, a fire was set there, and even after forty years, that fire has not been extinguished.
