According to researchers, Charkha was invented in India around 700 AD.
- On the spinning wheel, cotton thread was converted into yarn that could be woven into cloth. In earlier times a wooden pole was tied to a horizontal wheel.
- When the big wheel on the right hand is turned by hand, the shaft also rotates.
- In the left hand of the spinner, the yarn is twisted and spun at an angle.
- Until the invention of the loom in the eighteenth century, spinning was done on the wheel in Europe.
- The idea of spinning yarn on a spinning wheel was suggested to Gandhiji in 1908. But they could not get Charkha.
- Two years after the establishment of the Sabarmati Ashram in 1916, he got a charkha from a widow. Gandhiji gave a lot of encouragement to spinning on Charkha.
