How Did the names of the continents come about..?

Do you know how the seven continents of the world got their names?

Asia

The name Asia is believed to be derived from the Assyrian, i.e. Asu meaning the rising sun or east.

Asia is one of the world's most notable geographical regions, which is either considered a continent in its own right or a subcontinent of Eurasia, which shares the continental landmass of Afro-Eurasia with Africa.

Area: 44.58 million km²

Population: 456.07 crores (2018)

Africa

The name Africa is the name of the tribes of the Berber tribe. The Romans adopted it as the name of a province in their empire, and later an entire continent.

Africa is the world's second-largest and second-most populous continent, after Asia in both cases. At about 30.3 million km² including adjacent islands, it covers 6% of Earth's total surface area and 20% of its land area. With 1.4 billion people as of 2021, it accounts for about 18% of the world's human population.

Area: 30,370,000 km2 (11,730,000 sq mi) (2nd)

Population: 121.61 crores (2016)

Europe

Not sure about the name of Europe. Europe is said to mean mainland.

Europe is a large peninsula conventionally considered a continent in its own right because of its great physical size and the weight of its history and traditions.

Area: 10.53 million km²

Population: 74.64 crores (2018)

America

America is named after Amerigo Vespucci, a colleague of Columbus who discovered these continents.

The Americas, which are sometimes collectively called America, are a landmass comprising the totality of North and South America. The Americas make up most of the land in Earth's Western Hemisphere and comprise the New World.

Area: 42.55 million km²

Population: 100.16 crores (2016)

Australia

The name Australia is derived from the Latin word Australis. Australis means south.

The continent of Australia, sometimes known in technical contexts by the names Sahul, Australia-New Guinea, Australinea, Meganesia, or Papualand to distinguish it from the country of Australia, is located within the Southern and Eastern hemispheres.

Area: 7.692 million km²

Population: 39,357,469 (6th)

Antarctica

The word Antarctica is used as an antithesis of the Greek word Arctic. The Greek word arctic means bear. As this area falls under the Great Bear constellation, it was named Arctic.

Antarctica, the southernmost continent and site of the South Pole, is a virtually uninhabited, ice-covered landmass. Most cruises to the continent visit the Antarctic Peninsula, which stretches toward South America. It’s known for the Lemaire Channel and Paradise Harbor, striking, iceberg-flanked passageways, and Port Lockroy, a former British research station turned museum. The peninsula’s isolated terrain also shelters rich wildlife, including many penguins.

Area: 13.66 million km²

Population: 1,000 to 5,000 (seasonal)
